i was standing by the window on a cold and cloudy day when i saw the hearse come rolling to carry my father away will the circle be unbroken bye and bye, lord, bye and bye there's a better home awaiting in the sky, lord, in the sky i said to the undertaker undertaker, please drive slow for that body you are carrying lord, i hate to see him go will the circle be unbroken bye and bye, lord, bye and bye there's a better home awaiting in the sky, lord, in the sky well i followed close behind him tried to hold up and be brave but i could not hide my sorrow when they laid him in that grave will the circle be unbroken bye and bye, lord, bye and bye there's a better home awaiting in the sky, lord, in the sky i went back home, lord, that home was lonesome since my father, he was gone all of my brothers and sisters crying what a home, so sad and alone will the circle be unbroken bye and bye, lord, bye and bye there's a better home awaiting in the sky, lord, in the sky

when death shall close these eyelids and this heart shall cease to beat and they lay me down to rest in some flowery bound retreat will you miss me (miss me when i'm gone) will you miss me (miss me when i'm gone) will you miss me (miss me when i'm gone) will you miss me when i'm gone perhaps you'll plant a flower on my poor unworthy grave come and sit along beside me when the roses nod and wave will you miss me (miss me when i'm gone) will you miss me (miss me when i'm gone) will you miss me (miss me when i'm gone) will you miss me when i'm gone one sweet thought my soul shall cherish when this fleeting life has flown this sweet thought will cheer when dying will you miss me when i'm gone when these lips shall nevermore press a kiss upon thy brow but lie cold and still in death will you love me then as now will you miss me (miss me when i'm gone) will you miss me (miss me when i'm gone) will you miss me (miss me when i'm gone) will you miss me when i'm gone

my heart is sad and i am lonely for the only one that i love when shall i see her, oh no never 'til we meet in heaven above oh bury me beneath the willow underneath the weeping willow tree so she will know where i am sleeping and perhaps she'll weep for me she told me that she dearly loved me how could i believe it untrue until the angels softly whispered she will prove untrue to you oh bury me beneath the willow underneath the weeping willow tree so she will know where i am sleeping and perhaps she'll weep for me tomorrow was to be our wedding god oh god, where can she be she's out a-courting with another and no longer cares for me oh bury me beneath the willow underneath the weeping willow tree so she will know where i am sleeping and perhaps she'll weep for me

for fear the hearts of men are failing for these are latter days we know the great depression now is spreading god's word declared it would be so i'm going where there's no depression to the lovely land that's free from care i'll leave this world of toil and trouble my home's in heaven, i'm going there in that bright land, there'll be no hunger no orphan child crying out for bread no weeping widows, toil or struggle no shrouds, no coffins and no death i'm going where there's no depression to the lovely land that's free from care i'll leave this world of toil and trouble my home's in heaven, i'm going there the dark hour of midnight nearing the tribulation time will come the storms will hurl the midnight fears and sweep lost millions to their doom i'm going where there's no depression to the lovely land that's free from care i'll leave this world of toil and trouble my home's in heaven, i'm going there my home's in heaven, i'm going there

all my life i've wondered if what i've done was wrong all i ever cared to do was ride my pony on i never had no heartache was always happy and gay until i met a texas girl who stole my heart away where the sleepy rio grande rolls slowly to the sea it was there she promised to be mine throughout eternity but the angels, they grew jealous of beauty and her smile and came along one stormy night and stole away my bride the birds have hushed their singing sadness is over the land the birds, they miss my darling by the sleepy rio grande her lips were like the russian wine her hair, it hung in curls her cheeks were like the dawn of day that breaks upon the world she's gone and left me lonely i miss the touch of her hand tonight while i'm walking by the sleepy rio grande where the sleepy rio grande rolls slowly to the sea it was there she promised to be mine throughout eternity but the angels, they grew jealous of beauty and her smile and came along one stormy night and stole away my bride the birds have hushed their singing sadness is over the land the birds, they miss my darling by the sleepy rio grande

it would have been better for us had we never in this wide and wicked world had never met but the pleasures we both seemed to gather i am sure, love, i'll never forget oh i'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes who is sailing far over the sea i am thinking tonight of my blue eyes and i wonder if she ever thinks of me well you told me once, dear, that you loved me and you vowed that we would never part but a link in the chain has been broken leaving me with a sad and aching heart oh i'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes who is sailing far over the sea i am thinking tonight of my blue eyes and i wonder if she ever thinks of me when the cold, cold grave shall enclose me will you come near and shed just one tear will you say to the strangers around you a poor heart you have broken lies here oh i'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes who is sailing far over the sea oh i'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes and i wonder if she ever thinks of me

it takes a worried man to sing a worried song it takes a worried man to sing a worried song i'm worried now but i won't be worried long i went across the river and i lay down to sleep oh i went across the river and i lay down to sleep when i woke up had shackles on my feet twenty nine links of chain around my leg twenty nine links of chain around my leg and on each leg the initials of my name it takes a worried man to sing a worried song it takes a worried man to sing a worried song i'm worried now but i won't be worried long well i asked the judge what might be my fine i asked the judge what might be my fine twenty one years on the rocky mountain line the train that i ride sixteen coaches long the train that i ride sixteen coaches long the girl i love is on that train and gone well it takes a worried man to sing a worried song it takes a worried man to sing a worried song i'm worried now but i won't be worried long

are you tired of me, my darling did you mean those words you said that has made me yours forever since the day that we were wed tell me could you live life over would you make it otherwise are you tired of me, my darling answer only with your eyes do you ever rue the springtime since we first each other met since we spoke in warm affection words my heart won't soon forget tell me could you live life over would you make it otherwise are you tired of me, my darling answer only with your eyes do you think the bloom departed from these cheeks you once thought fair do you think i've grown cold-hearted with the passing of the years tell me could you live life over would you make it otherwise are you tired of me, my darling answer only with your eyes

oh i'll twine with my mingles and waving black hair with the roses so red and the lilies so fair and the myrtles so bright with the emerald dew the pale and the leader and eyes look like blue i will dance, i will sing and my laugh shall be gay i will charm every heart in her crown, i will sway when i woke from my dreaming, my idols were clay all portions of love had all blown away oh she taught me to love her and promised to love and to cherish me over all others above how my poor heart is wandering no misery can tell she left me no warning, no words of farewell yeah she taught me to love her and called me her flower that was blooming to cheer her through life's dreary hour oh i long to see her and regret the dark hour she's gone and neglected her wildwood flower

about

"wildwood flower" was one of the first songs i ever learned to play when i was a kid. i've always felt that song SO deeply in my soul. i've felt connected to so many of the songs that were recorded by the carter family.

if you don't already know, the carter family were what many consider to be the originators of what we know today as "country" music and the first true stars of the genre (originally active from 1927-1956).

where i grew up, if you picked up a guitar and tried to learn to play it, it wouldn't be long before you started trying to play a carter family song -- this music was deeply engrained in the culture there, and still is.

they made a huge impression in bluegrass ("wildwood flower")

they made a huge impression in honky tonk ("i am thinking tonight of my blue eyes")

they made a huge impression in cowboy music ("my texas girl")

they even made their mark in punk music when uncle tupelo infamously recorded "no depression"

these songs are so comforting for me. that's why i decided to record this album -- i was going through a very rough moment and need to reground and comfort myself. this music helped me do that. i hope they can resonate with you too!

this record is rough in a lot of ways. i wanted to keep the free-flowing spirit of the original recordings intact. that's why i chose to record most everything in one or two takes. some mistakes were made, and those mistakes were left in the final master recordings. i wanted to these songs to feel as human as possible.

i'll be donating all proceeds from the sales of this record to the american academy of addiction psychiatry.
